As our world continues moving towards a greener economy, the demand for electricians is only increasing. The expansion of electric vehicles, renewable energy projects and green building initiatives are all part of what’s driving it.


Not only do we need more electricians, but we’re also looking at different skillsets than we did even a couple of years ago. The green revolution requires skills emphasizing sustainability, energy efficiency, and the integration of renewable energy technologies into electrical systems.


While the national standard of job growth is around seven percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is projecting a 14 percent job increase for electricians. Here’s why:


Charging stations: As the demand for electric vehicles grows, the widespread availability of charging infrastructure becomes paramount. As electricians, we’re not only responsible for installing charging stations, but we also realize we’re enabling the expansion of the EV market and encouraging the adoption of cleaner transportation alternatives.


Integration of renewable energy sources: Electricians are essential in connecting and maintaining the infrastructure for renewable energy sources like solar and wind. This facilitates the integration of clean energy into the grid, contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a shift toward a more sustainable energy mix.


Transmission line maintenance: Electricians contribute to the upkeep of transmission lines, which form the backbone of the electrical grid. Regular maintenance ensures the reliable and efficient transmission of electricity, reducing the risk of power outages and enhancing the resilience of the energy infrastructure.


Electric appliance installation and maintenance: Electricians contribute to the deployment of energy-efficient appliances, such as heat pumps. When these appliances are installed and maintained properly, they enhance energy efficiency, reduce overall energy consumption, and promote sustainable living practices.


While the growth in demand is exciting, the availability of workers is not projected to keep up. This dilemma has the potential to put a strain on electricians, propelling a negative narrative about the quality of work available in the trades.


It can quickly become a vicious cycle, but it’s not one we can’t break. It’s time to double down on apprenticeship programs, and one example we can follow is from high schools in Maryland. They’ve adopted an innovative approach to apprenticeship programs for high schoolers, aiming to provide alternative pathways to career success and address the growing demand for skilled workers in various industries.


Their approach involves ambitious targets, collaboration with industry partners, focused recruitment efforts, financial support, and a commitment to providing diverse and viable career paths. It reflects a broader recognition of the importance of skilled trades and vocational training in meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving workforce landscape.
